Ateliers Chanakya: A Sanctuary of Indian Craftsmanship

Tucked away in the heart of Mumbai, the Ateliers Chanakya embody the soul of a centuries-old craft. Masters of zardozi, aari, and chikankari embroidery, they create pieces where each stitch seems to capture a moment of eternity.

But Chanakya is more than just a workshop. Founded in the 1980s by Vinod Shah, it has become a key player in preserving ancestral textile techniques, while seamlessly adapting them to the language of contemporary luxury. For over 25 years, Dior and Chanakya have nurtured a close relationship, united by a shared devotion to detail and the perfection of craft. This partnership took on new meaning in 2016 with the creation of the Chanakya School of Craft—a project dedicated to training women in the art of embroidery and traditional craftsmanship.

When Embroidery Becomes Art

The pinnacle of this collaboration came to life in a truly exceptional moment: the Dior Fall 2023 show, staged at the foot of the Gateway of India in Mumbai. A historic location where India’s colonial past and its contemporary aspirations converge.

For this unique occasion, Chanakya created a monumental installation: The Toran—a 14-meter-high tapestry inspired by the traditional garlands adorning Indian temples and home entrances. A true textile fresco, it required over 35,000 hours of work and the collaboration of 300 artisans, who brought together 25 different embroidery techniques.

The silhouettes on the runway reflected this meeting of Paris and Mumbai. Dior’s iconic Bar jackets were reimagined with floral embroidery reminiscent of Mughal gardens, while chiffon gowns embellished with pearls and gold thread echoed the elegance of traditional saris.

Some dresses from the collection demanded over 800 hours of handwork, each pearl sewn individually in patterns inspired by Rajasthani frescoes. This level of precision—heir to the legacy of Mughal artisans—infused each piece with an almost timeless aura.

Each look told a story, immersing the audience in the richness of Indian textiles: soft pinks inspired by the frescoes of Jaipur, radiant golds evoking Rajasthani temples, and mirror embroideries from Gujarat came together in a vibrant, sophisticated color palette.

Craft as a Universal Language

This partnership reflects a major shift in contemporary fashion: a return to authenticity, to the artisanal gesture, to a deep respect for time and tradition.

Through the Chanakya School of Craft, the impact goes far beyond couture. Since its inception, over 780 women have been trained—reviving endangered techniques and paving the way for a new generation of artisans.
